He was poor at the time and, in return for lodging at the home of a Hollywood producer, Mr. ![]() Higgins wrote ''Harold and Maude'' when he was a 28-year-old film student at the University of California at Los Angeles the 20-minute drama was originally to be the basis for his master's thesis. After making the rounds in revival and repertory movie houses around the country, it finally began to return a profit in 1983. ''Harold and Maude'' received tepid reviews and drew unenthusiastic audiences when it was released in 1971, but it grew into a cult classic that some viewers say they have seen more than 100 times. His best-known work was ''Harold and Maude,'' the story of a love affair between an 80-year-old woman and a suicidal young man who finds happiness with her. Higgins, who was born on the French island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific, was known for lighthearted screenplays with a fine-tuned sense of humor. ![]() He was 47 years old and had been suffering from AIDS, said a spokeswoman for his production company. ![]() Colin Higgins, a screenwriter and director whose works include ''Silver Streak,'' ''Foul Play'' and ''Harold and Maude,'' died Friday at his home in Los Angeles. ![]()

It’s a plainer, scrappier sort of book, but that’s exactly right, because Australia was, and is, a plainer, scrappier sort of place. ![]() Monkey Grip got the amounts of us and them in better proportion. Patrick White got a lot of hot, fresh Australia into his books, but he thought he had to out-English the English and hold it all in a thick, heavy modernist casing – a modernist baroque. Plenty of books had been written by Australians and were supposed to be about Australia, but in their style, their form, they were always more than half English. ![]() Many learned persons will disagree with me, but I think Monkey Grip, first published in 1977, was the first time a lot of hot, fresh, plain Australian language and behaviour really coexisted with literature.
